Club News - First City Squash & Racketball Results

, The squash committee organised a superb Racketball and Squash Finals evening and Awards Night last Saturday evening. Thank you to all our volunteers during the evening especially Guy and Aly Birkett and Steve Chilvers who received an award for his contribution throughout the year as Tournament Organiser. We had excellent support during the finals with many thanks to our young enthusiastic supporters who created a wonderful atmosphere. Trophies were presented by our Club Chairman, John Hollingsworth and the event sponsor, Chris Bywater. The First City 2016 Men’s Squash and Racketball Champion was Darren Lewis. The First City 2016 Ladies Squash and Racketball Champion was Roxy Keshavarz. The First City 2016 Squash and Racketball Junior Champion was Andrew Hepworth. The First City 2016 Vintage Squash Champion was Alan Griffiths. The Squash and Racketball Plate winners were Jodie Hodgkins, Doug Russell and Stephen Pass. A surprised Roxy also received the Player of the Year Award for her contribution as team captain and her general enthusiasm and helpfulness in encouraging players to play and train with passion. Our new Head of Squash & Racketball, Matt McFahn was in attendance and spoke at the awards dinner setting out his vision and priorities for the coming months. Matt is an accomplished and highly experienced Level 4 squash professional with diverse experience across the squash/racketball and sport industry. He is an inspirational coach providing expertise in coaching all levels of player from beginner to international level with significant experience as a coach educator. He has had considerable success delivering international assignments both coaching national teams and establishing national programmes. He has had previous employment with England Squash in numerous capacities including Regional and National Development Manager positions and prior to joining us was Director of Coaching and Operations for a Community Interest Company. He has coached in England and Spain, delivering high quality training camps to elite level juniors and creating the Off The Wall Squash Junior Progress Awards. Matt, Darren and James will be delivering a revitalised programme of individual and group coaching initiatives over the coming months so keep a look out for their Facebook posts, emails and posters – their aim to get more players playing more often. All in all it was a very fitting tribute to John Chappell whose funeral is this Monday, his name on the Honours Board overlooking the courts as Runner Up in 1978/9. Some photos of the finals and awards evening are attached with plenty more on our Facebook Group which now totals over 580 members. Keep healthy, play sport and make friends, Marc Hughes Operations Manager
