Eric Barker - 90 Years of Age on April 1st

Dear [[firstname]],

I sincerely hope you are all in good health and all complying with the governments restrictions to help support our NHS workers and to save lives.

Someone who has lived through many challenging times is Eric Barker. Eric is an amazing member of our club and is our oldest playing member. In the days when the club issued membership numbers, Eric is membership number 43!

The reason I mention this is that on Wednesday 1st April Eric will be 90 years of age. The club had planned to have a little surprise gathering for Eric in the bar and restaurant to celebrate this milestone. Sadly COVID 19 restrictions prevent us from doing this however we are keen to let Eric know how much we think of him.

I’m sending Eric a card on Monday afternoon and will be adding comments from his friends at the club. If you would like me to include any comments from you please email me at marc.hughes@wltsc.com by midday tomorrow.

For those of you that may not know Eric, I can assure you he is a true gentlemen, he regularly arrives at the club in his blue rubber bumpered MGB GT. He is a traditionalist and can usually be seen sporting his blue blazer and white shorts. Not only is Eric still playing tennis, he has lessons with Amber and more recently Max and organises a regular doubles on the indoor courts. He does so much for other people such as organising a monthly social get together at the club for his 41 Club (Round Table members over the age of 40) colleagues where he has been president for the last 5 years.

Eric truly loves his tennis and is probably still sneaking down to the club to hit against the wall as part of his daily exercise. At one stage he was a member of WLTSC, Albrighton and the Albert Tennis club. A very humble man who regularly supports young tennis players in Albrighton by organising their coaching and delivering coaching back in the day. At Albrighton he is also very well loved; they have even named Tennis Court 3 after him. He’s been a member of our club for the last 30 years, prior to joining us he founded the Tennis Club in Bilston.

A departmental Manager at the Midlands Bank in Birmingham New Street Eric was “saved by tennis”! His office desk was directly underneath a large pained glass window, he had an impromptu call to play tennis one day and duly left the office only to hear that moments later a gas canister exploded from across the road and smashed the window sending large shards to his desk.

Eric has lived through a great deal having been 10 years of age at the start of World War 2, rationing and sirens were the order of the day and oranges a particular luxury for him. He used to live in Bilston at what is now the Robin 2 Nightclub and these current COVID 19 restrictions remind him of his days as a child but in true Eric Barker style he continues to keep positive and upbeat, a lesson for us all there.

We look forward to celebrating with Eric when the club reopens but, in the meantime, please email me any birthday messages and I’ll endeavour to include them in the card.

Kind regards,

Marc Hughes
