Christmas News from the Tennis Court

Hi [[firstname]]

Christmas is Coming !

Just 5 sleeps to go before the big day and we're still going strong on the tennis front.

Last Saturday 35 of our Juniors created mayhem as they celebrated the end of their tennis season.

The chaos was managed by 6 of our superb coaches who delivered a range of challenging games and exercises.

Thanks go to the LTA and HEAD who provided a plentiful supply of prizes. And thanks also to Darren and Max who provided the healthy option of cupcakes, sweets and samosas.

Junior Development and Coaching Court Allocation

A number of our older Performance Juniors have now moved on to College or University as they reached 18 years of age.

This year Max, Simon and Jake have been focused on developing a new intake of 6 to 9 year olds in our Red and Orange groups. We are building for the future and who knows, another Henry Searle.

In order to be able to deliver their programme Max requested that they use Court 1 (in addition to 2 and 3) on Tuesday afternoons from 4.30pm to 5.30pm. To offset this and to maintain member availability Court 2 will be given back to Members from 5.30pm to 6.30pm, and will only be bookable by the coaching team under the 4 day rule.

The Tennis Committee were happy to agree to these arrangements, noting that Coaching Court hours are currently running well below the allowable 90 hours per week.

Christmas Sports Day

It's a tradition at WLTSC and a great way to run off some of those Christmas calories.

You can choose Tennis, Squash and Racketball or one of Foggys fitness classes.

Sign up now on MyCourts.

Afterwards spend some social time with friends in the bar and restaurant which will be open until 3.00pm

The Challenge Cup

We are closing in on the final draws for the semi-finals which will be done before the year end.

Finals Night is on Friday 19th January starting at 6.30pm on the Indoor courts.

The Eric Barker Shelter

When Eric died in January 2022 he was our oldest tennis member and had regularly played doubles each week and also had the occasional tennis lesson, such was his passion for the sport even at the age of 91.

During the pandemic Eric often sneaked down to court 10 to have a little practice against the hitting wall and his blue rubber bumpered MGB GT was still going strong albeit with a few additional scratches.

With thanks to a contribution from his family we have been able to erect a shelter between courts 9 and 10 in his memory.

With the amount of rain we have had recently it's already proven to be a valuable retreat from weather.

Sunday Evening and Team Tennis

We are considering arranging some friendly matches on Sunday evenings for intermediate and above standard players against some of our local clubs.

We already have a number of our ladies interested in playing but could do with a few men so we can have the option of mixed doubles. If you're interested, please reply to this email to let us know.

Staffs Tennis Leagues

The season starts again in April and we are looking to attract interest from some of our newer members who have risen through the ranks and may be interested in joining our lower Mens and Ladies teams. Again please reply to this email if you want to give it a go.

And Finally

After 3 years as Director of Tennis and Chair of the Tennis Committee I am standing down at the AGM in January.

I want to thank my fellow volunteers on the Committee for their contribution over that time. Particular thanks to Emma Bolland, Paula Robinson and Amun Samra who are also standing down.

The Committee going forward will consist of Darren Collinswood, Mike James, Manny Samra, Karen Fletcher and Marilyn Goodwin plus some new faces who will be putting themselves forward for future election..

There are two more members of the Committee, Max Thomson and Amber Fellows whose commitment to WLTSC has made a huge difference to Junior and Adult tennis at the Club. I thank them both for their outstanding contributions this year.

On behalf of the Tennis Committee I wish you and your families a Very Happy Christmas and a Prosperous New Year and I look forward to seeing you on court in 2024 if not before..

With Seasons Greetings

Steve Chilvers
