Summer loving had me a blast

Dear [[firstname]]

Tomorrow the Birmingham 2022 Commonwealth Games begins, and I hope you’ve either got tickets to one of the 20 sports on show or will be watching it on TV. I’d love you all to watch a game of Squash on the BBC during the games and see how amazing these stars are and if you get inspired, you might perhaps give Squash or Racketball (Squash 57) a try when the season begins in September.

In February 2020, I sat down and wrote a draft of a legacy programme for the game of squash, Mini Squash Courts, Outdoor Squash Courts, Events in New Street Station, building squash courts in schools, and so on. 18 months later I can’t believe what’s been achieved.

  • 82,000 young people being introduced to squash
  • New Street Station Event
  • 1st Playground Squash Court in a primary school in Birmingham
  • Take Squash to the people
  • Make squash visible

On Friday I begin working at the games, not inside the incredible squash arena (See Picture), but outside the building with my amazing Mini Squash Court showing squash fans and newcomers, the newest way to promote the game of squash. I also become “Mr Squash”, a name that was given to me quite a few years ago but was taken on by the Commonwealth Games family and I’m now known around the squash world.

I’m not the only one who is working at the games, we have quite a few members who are involved in volunteering and even a few involved in the opening ceremony! Good luck to you all and have a wonderful experience.

A New Season

Once the Commonwealth Games leave the West Midlands, Mr Squash will be back at WLTSC continuing to inspire you, so why not sign up for one of our weekly sessions in September:

Wooden Racket Squash Social Evening – Bob Pickering Memorial

Congratulations to Jason Smith won the Wooden Racket Squash Social Evening in memory of Bob Pickering. Thank you to everyone who played on the night. Thank you to Steve Chilvers for donating the rackets. A massive thank you to Rod Willetts for delving into the archives and framing Bob’s handwritten draw for the Carver Cup from 1995. If you’re in the club room, please look at this amazing piece of history on the wall at the entrance to the conservatory.

Hope you have a wonderful Commonwealth Games experience and summer holiday

See you all soon.
