In Loving Memory of John Birkett

Dear [[firstname]]

Many of you may remember John Birkett. John was a member of WLTSC from the 1970`s until 2005.

A squash player, famed for his lob serve and tricky boast (a shot he passed on to his son, Guy, who continues to frustrate racketball playing members with the same shot today!!), John was a pillar of the lunchtime squash league which back in the heyday of squash, across the 7 courts, would see 30+ members competing in the 12.30 to 2pm slot every weekday. Rackets were wooden and heavy, grips were terry towelling, strings were made of catgut, clothing was all white and Dunlop Greenflash was the footwear of choice.

After finishing his playing career, John continued to talk fondly of his time at the Club and the friendly squash rivalries that played out each weekday lunchtime before members headed back to work. The friendships John made in that period continued throughout his lifetime. Many of those lunchtime player rivals are no longer with us but a handful, who know who they are, continue as playing members to this day.

John has recently and bravely fought a 2 year battle with Motor Neurones Disease. He lost 18/16 in the fifth game and passed peacefully at 84 years old in Compton Hospice on the 24 July with his Sons, Guy and Jolyon, and his Partner of 20+ years, Julia, by his side.

John`s funeral arrangements will be confirmed in due course and the family would welcome those that wish to remember John back to the Club for a bite to eat and some tall stories afterwards.

No flowers please but should you wish to make a donation then please do so to either the MND Association or Compton Hospice, both of which supported John admirably through his illness.

Our thoughts and sincere condolences are with his family and friends at this difficult time.
