Dear [[firstname]],
A Few wods from Alan Griffiths and Robin Chipperfield
It is our sad duty to have to inform fellow members of the passing of Bob Pickering in the early hours of Sunday morning.
Bob was one of the nicest and kindest gentlemen you could wish to meet. He was an Honorary Life Member of the club.
Known by every single Squash player at WLTSC, it was fair to say Bob was a true legend of our club. A member for some 50 years Bob was a formidable Squash player in his day.
A stalwart of the Men’s 2nd team he played along side Robin Haynes, Martin Vickers, and Gerald Moore. He made a solitary appearance in the Men’s first team, but it was none the less one of which he was justifiably proud.
For several decades Bob filled the role as organiser in chief for all championships and Carver Cup competitions staged at the club.
Every competing player would attest the fact that his attention to detail meant that every single tournament ran with impeccable precision. It was a position that he filled perfectly and was one that he loved. He gave up huge amounts of his time for the squash section. He would hand write all the draws, sometime there would be over 100 entrants. He would also be down at the courts organising and marking matches, usually with a glass of red wine in his hand.
When Bob stopped doing the tournaments, they were never the same again.
A talented local Architect, Bob was renowned for his housing designs any number of which can be seen around the city.
He continued to work on projects and was still available for commission until the latter half of 2021.
A true sportsman, Bob was as a young man a fine let-handed batsman and golfer of some repute, a game which he continued to play until the end of his life.
His true fighting spirit was shown in the fact that he trained and played as long as possible.
Indeed, he was the last in the gym and on court even late as March this year.
Having battled Parkinson’s Disease without complaint for several years, Bob was diagnosed with further serious issues and hospitalised in April.
Further Decline saw him admitted to Compton Hospice on Monday 30th May where he passed peacefully away attended by his brother Arthur on Sunday 5th June.
Known to his family as Robert and to his Squash family simply as Bob, he will be missed by all.
We shall pass on funeral details as they emerge.
