Chairman's Update 5 Jul

Dear [[firstname]] ,

In the last few months society has been faced with unprecedented challenges as a result of the Covid-19 pandemic. Some of those challenges are still with us and some will continue for the foreseeable future.

Unfortunately, the club has not been immune from the impact of Covid-19. We have followed government and sporting body guidance and recommendations where applicable to ensure that the club has remained safe at all times. We have re-opened facilities as soon as we were permitted to do so and I am pleased to announce that the bar will re-open from Monday 6th July and the restaurant will re-open from Monday 13th July. The remaining facilities will be re-opened as soon as guidelines permit.

The financial impact on the club to date has been significant. We have applied for government assistance through the Coronavirus Job Retention Scheme and through the Retail, Leisure and Hospitality Grant Fund. We have also received a general rates holiday from the local council for the financial year 2020/21.However, despite taking all these measures and controlling our costs, the loss of nearly all of our income for the period of the lockdown will result in the club sustaining a very sizeable loss for the current financial year. We are forecasting a cash reduction in this financial year of £135,000 and that, even after the club has fully re- opened, we do not foresee a return to our normal levels of income for some time.

At the beginning of the lockdown we said that we would give members a credit for the period of time that the club was closed. At that point in time I do not believe that many people would have anticipated that the club would still not be fully open by now. The General Committee decided at our recent meeting that the subject of the credit needed to be discussed and our decision communicated to members in order that they were fully aware of what will be happening in the future.

The Committee had to balance our commitment made at the start of the lockdown with the financial reality that the club now finds itself in and will be in going forward. This was not a straightforward discussion and the subject has been debated at length. The outcome is that we have decided to give members a three month credit in compensation for the whole of the lockdown period. The credit will be provided to members in two equal instalments. The first instalment will be available against a member’s next renewal at the new subscription rate. The second instalment will be available against their following year’s renewal. This will be available to those members who continued their membership for the whole of the lockdown period.

The members of the General Committee have decided to forego the three month credit. We would hope that other members will take a similar view. Together we can help the club through this difficult time and ensure that we have a thriving financially viable club for the future. If you wish to apply for the credit, please apply upon renewal. Details of how to do this will be included with the renewal letter.

I am sure that, like me, you are looking forward to the club being fully re-opened and meeting up with friends and playing sport without any restrictions. Hopefully, that will be soon.

Kind Regards
