Squash & Racketball Newsletter

Dear [[firstname]]

It’s been a busy time for Squash & Racketball and that’s brilliant news, there’s a positivity, which the club hasn’t seen for quite a few years and along with the squash committee, we are determined to build upon this moving forward.

As I said it’s been super busy, and I want to take this opportunity to thank everyone who has taken part and contributed to the success over the past few months.

Women’s Squash & Racketball Week – We put on 9 sessions to give women a chance to try squash and racketball. What made it lovely, was along with lots of newcomers, we had many players who returned to the courts again. Maybe they’d given up, maybe we encouraged them to pick up a racket again, whatever the reason, they came back to give squash & racketball a go again and it made for a great week. Thank you to all our amazing women who helped throughout - Cathy and Beth Grinsell, Helen Tottey, Kate Fuller, Mia Wright and Tanita Patel.

Macmillan Racketball Cake and Coffee Morning – 15 ladies joined Steve Pearcey and myself for a drop in racketball session, to enjoy a fun morning on court and then after have a drink, eat cake (especially my Lemon Drizzle Cake) and raise money for Macmillan Cancer Support. Thank you to everyone who donated, you generously raised over £180.00 for this amazing cause.

First City Squash Club Championships – During September, 50 squash players took part in the championships, culminating with a wonderful Finals night, where well over 60 people came to support the finalist and to watch some great matches. My favourite match of the night was the Ladies final, where Jodie Hodgkins narrowly defeated Kate Fuller in an unbelievable match. Our Men’s champion Allan Walton defeated the Dragon Slayer Robin Chipperfield who had beaten some very good opponents to reach the final. The vision of the night (Picture attached) belonged to Roy Cashmore and Mike Rawlings dressed ready for the beach instead of the squash court. (Please find attached a list of our champions)

Greg Silvester – During the Squash Championship month, Jason Smith had mentioned a young man by the name of Greg Silvester, who he thought we might like to invite to give an after-dinner speech and we did. So, after the squash final presentations, we all made our way up to the bar where we were royally entertained by Greg, who from the age of 10, began training and competing in gymnastics with Special Olympics GB, who has devoted a huge amount of time helping to transform the lives of people with intellectual disabilities as a volunteer, coach, ambassador, and – for nine years – as a Special Olympics GB board trustee, fighting discrimination and raising hundreds of thousands of pounds along the way. Greg gave an incredible and inspirational speech, everyone who was there was completely in awe of this local hero. I for one would like to welcome Greg back so you could all here this amazing young man’s story.

Junior Squash Club Championships – A few hours before the Squash Club Championship Finals, we held the Junior Squash Club Championships. Most of our juniors had never played in a tournament, in fact 90% had never played a proper match, so there were some nervous young boys and girls, along with a few anxious parents. All of this soon went away once the event began, with our fantastic team of coaches helping and supporting every player during each match. This was a glorious fun filled afternoon of squash and one I won’t forget.

World Squash Day – WLTSC played its part in the 20th anniversary of World Squash Day with a morning of Squash & Racketball organised by the brilliant Helen Tottey & Beth Grinsell. This global squash event was set up in aftermath of the 9/11 attacks, where many New York squash players were killed in the World Trade Center. Since then, this has grown, with hundreds of thousands of players from all over the world taking part in the annual global celebration of squash. This year’s campaign was all about getting back on to court, I’m delighted to say that our members are well and truly back on the court.

Dave Smart Racketball Handicap Tournament supported by Sports Massage Wolverhampton – 55 members have entered this year’s event, which is currently in progress, the finals take place on Saturday 6th November starting at 5.30pm and we would be delighted if you would come down on the night and support all the finalists. They’ll be a bar set up by the courts and after the presentations, we’ll continue the celebrations up in the club house.

Wolverhampton Junior Open – Last Sunday we hosted our 2nd Wolverhampton Junior Open of the season, the first event back in July saw 40 players enter and on this occasion 72 players from across the country entered. It was a full-on day with matches starting at 9.00am and continued unabated till 7.15pm. Congratulations to a couple of our junior members won medals at the event, Leon Smith won a bronze medal in the Boys U19 Championship and Connor Walton won a Silver Medal in the Boys U13 Championship. Thank you to all the members who volunteered their time last Sunday to help make the event such a success.

New squash and racketball weekly programme – Here are 2 new additions to the Squash and Racketball weekly programme (please see the full timetable attached)

This adapted version of Racketball allows for up to 3 bounces meaning you get all the fun of the Racketball game with more time to get to the ball. It’s perfect for all abilities, especially those returning from injuries, with limited movement and following physiotherapy programmes.
