Chairman's Update 18 Mar

Dear [[firstname]],

On behalf of everyone associated with the running of the club, I would like to thank all members for their continued support during the Covid-19 pandemic. It is very much appreciated.

As we approach 29th March 2021, and the beginning of the re-opening of the club’s facilities we can now clearly see the light at the end of the tunnel. We have already advised you of our roadmap for the future opening of the various facilities. At the present moment this remains firmly on track.

In his recent budget, the Chancellor announced additional support measures for the leisure industry, regarding restart grants, business rates relief and the extension of the furlough scheme. We will be applying for any assistance to which we are entitled.

We appreciate that by the time the club re-opens on 29th March 2021, the club will have been in lockdown for three months and that members will have been unable to use the club during that time. This subject has been discussed at length by both the Executive Committee and the General Committee. In particular, we felt that we needed to balance the differing priorities of members. Some members wanted to receive a refund for the lockdown period whilst others wanted their money to be retained by the club. Both points of view are equally valid but require different solutions.

The Executive Committee and General Committee have, therefore, come up with the following measures:

  • In April 2021, members will be able to apply for an immediate cash refund of two months membership. This will be on the same basis as the refund for the November 2020 lockdown. If you wish to apply for the two month rebate please send your bank details, in confidence, to club@wltsc.com. This refund will not affect the credit of one and a half months membership, previously agreed in respect of the first lockdown, which will be available to members on their next renewal.
  • We are currently in the process of replacing the strength equipment in the gym and have taken this opportunity to invest in a suite of spin bikes . The strength equipment and spin bikes will be installed and available for use by members from 12th April. We intend to run free spin classes for members from 17th May as part of the free weekly programme from the System Energize team.
  • On 12th April we will be introducing a new digital card fob system. The card will also be capable of being used as a debit card in the bar, restaurant and shop once it has been topped up. We have agreed to give every adult member of the club a credit of £25.00 on their card for use in the bar restaurant or shop. This will expire on 31st December 2021.
  • On 12th April revised bar prices will come into effect. We have price matched ourselves with comparable local pubs and this has resulted in a reduction in our prices in a number of areas.
  • We have agreed that from 29th March 2021 to 18th April 2021, as part of the “Return To Tennis” programme, club classes and group sessions will be free . There will also be no charge for floodlights during the month of April. Similar concessions will be made to squash and racketball players when we have a clearer picture regarding the resumption of these activities.

The Executive Committee and General Committee are also aware of the need to invest in the club’s infrastructure in order to maintain the club’s status and attract new members. We have always wanted to improve the fabric of the club, but until we could see the potential end of the Covid-19 pandemic we have delayed any decision making. We are now in a position to be able to assess the financial impact of the various lockdowns and also assess the future financial position of the club, whilst taking into account the measures we have outlined above. We consider that we are now able to start and implement a programme of refurbishment and improvement that will begin with the upgrading of the men’s changing rooms. Our aim is to start work on the men’s changing rooms as soon as possible.

All the way through this awful situation our main objective has been to try and protect the financial position of the club for both existing and future members. I believe that with your help and support we have managed to achieve that.

I thank you on behalf of the club and your fellow members.

Kind Regards

John

Chairman
