Dear [[firstname]]
A Message from the President
In this period of self isolation, lockdown , social distancing etc for Covid 19, I would like to take this opportunity to contact our members. Apart from anything else, it keeps me active as we have been self isolating for nearly 5 weeks.
I joined the club 43 years ago ( not as many as some round the bar ) but a fair sum for a Scotsman, and joined to play Squash. I loved it and played 3 or 4 times a week for 22 years without any sort of success until knee surgery ended it.
I had gradually transferred to tennis prior to knee operations and played 3 or 4 times a week without any success apart from one losing mixed doubles plate with my daughter (club champion no less ). I captained the men’s 4th team to 5 promotions in 6 years. I was renamed Sven Goren Stevenson by old member Bob Pace.
My entry to the other sporting area , the gym, is still usually greeted with a loud cheer and I have never been quite sure which door opens into the gym. I have quite successfully managed to avoid the gym apart from a brief spell when I used the bike machines. Foolish I know and I am probably paying for it now.
My main visits to the club are now to the bar which I manage to make 3 or 4 times a week to chat to whoever is there at the time. There is always someone to speak to. After a hard day ,it is the ideal place to forget for a few hours all the problems of everyday life.
My main involvement has been in the management of the club in various roles over some 25 years culminating in the very enjoyable , stimulating and fruitful 4 years as Chairman and now as President which is an honorary role and does not involve any serious management of the club..
My involvement in the club has given me physical, mental and social benefits in abundance , much more than I have contributed. I could not replace the enjoyment playing squash, tennis and socialising and the memories it has given me.
At this time of this vicious virus, the club will be there for you when It draws to a close and you can resume your lives. There will be members who will have to consider their memberships but I know the current Chairman John and his committee will be making many allowances to allow you to continue your involvement in the club. I would ideally not like to see anyone resign , but if it is your last solution , please at least retain a social membership which allows you to retain all the benefits of a continued membership. Whether its squash, tennis , gym or socialising, its a great club with something for everyone.
I know the officers in the club , all volunteers I emphasise, will be in contact with you in the next few weeks regarding the future of the club after Covid 19 , but if my previous experiences are anything to go by, the future at WLTSC will be very good and I would like everyone to enjoy it. I certainly intend to for many years to come.
For now , be safe and please keep in contact with all your friends in the club especially those living alone.
Yours in Sport
Ron Stevenson
President
