Paul's Leaving Doo - Friday Evening

Dear [[firstname]],

This Friday evening is likely to be a very busy, emotional and wonderful celebration of Paul Hodgetts’ time here at the club as our Everypoint Rackets Manager. The Tennis Club Night starts at 6:30pm, please book at reception, it’s only £1 with buffet food provided by the club from 8pm to 9pm.

Paul joined the club aged 14 inspired and recommended by Alan Morgan, big thank you Alan. He has played for our first team for 17 years often as captain. At age 18 he joined the tennis coaching team as assistant coach under the guidance of Pete and Liz Brown; delivering tennis and squash coaching. At 20 he completed his Level 3 tennis and Level 2 squash coach awards, delivering individual lessons and running programmes at Codsall leisure centre and Brewood tennis club.

Paul worked on the programme for 4 years under the guidance of Pete Brown and Simon Fellows, qualifying to Level 4 Performance coach and playing at the senior county week for Staffordshire.

When Stuart Twigg and Extreme Tennis Academy took over the tennis coaching programme at the club, Paul worked for them across a couple of clubs but mainly still at Wolverhampton delivering the performance programme and as Staffordshire County Coach for four age groups. He organised and led tennis trips abroad to academies and tournaments and through full time player squads created a pathway for players such as Nikki Prosser (Parkes), Nick Morris, Henry Parry, national champions, American university graduates. He inspired beginners to team captains and helped lots more to fulfil their potential and enjoy tennis.

Stuart Twigg departed, and Paul was recruited as Head Coach in 2011. The coaching team still looks similar as then with Simon Bird, Nick Morris, Amber Fellows and Jo Webb. Paul has mentored Tennis apprentices such as Gregg Spooner, Max Thomson and more recently Tom Welsh. Paul leaves us in good order with an exceptional team of coaches also including Max, Tom and Clayton Edge. The club has decided not to recruit a new Rackets Manager as Paul is literally irreplaceable. Instead, the department has been restructured to enable and empower our very experienced team of coaches to expand their roles at the club as follows:

Amber Fellows is our Adult Participation Coordinator.

Simon Bird is our Local Player Development Centre Coordinator.

Jo Webb is our Junior Participation Coordinator.

Max Thomson is our Tournaments Coordinator.

Nick Morris is our (11 to 17 yrs) Performance Coordinator

Clayton Edge is our Touch Tennis and Tennis for Kids Coordinator.

Tom Welsh has joined the team as a Level 2 Club Coach and assists at many of the club sessions.

Together they are a formidable team and will continue to work closely with our Tennis Committee and myself to continue the improvements and the legacy created by Paul.

With great teamwork and leadership Paul has produced a thriving programme with tennis for all abilities including Rusty Rackets and Beginners’ courses. He has increased our internal league and tournament participation and Staffs tennis teams from 8 to 13, introduced a Coaches Cup, FA Cup, Team Training, Cardio Tennis, wheelchair sessions, trips to Spain, Torquay and the O2 arena. Having achieved his Level 5 Club Coach award Paul has accumulated a wealth of knowledge and will be a loss to tennis.

We wish Paul every success in the next chapter of his career and look forward to continuing to see him at the club as a member. Everyone is welcome on Friday evening and if you’d like to contribute to Paul’s leaving present then please pop into reception.

Keep healthy, play sport and make friends,

Marc Hughes
